The Rock Steady Crew and all their best moves are showcased in this acrobatic live appearance on Australian television. It was a full decade before the internet and the microwave oven was considered cutting edge technology in the home. It was the year that gave us Family Ties, The Cosby Show, Beverly Hills Cop and the Union Carbide gas leak in Bhopal, India became world news. By the mid-eighties, disco had died and rap music had firmly replaced it as the latest music craze. Breakdancing came along with rap and had youngsters obsessed with it and older generations sneering at it. As ever, they said it would never last, but its legacy continues to this day in the style of hip-hop. Three years before it was axed, pioneering music program Countdown (1974 - 1987) featured a special on rap and breakdancing with the visiting New Yorkers shown in their finest hour. They present their two most popular songs. As to the relevance of host Ian "Molly" Meldrum's gridirion outfit, well your guess is as good as mine. It's best dismissed as another example of "guess you had to be there." While his fashion sense was never the sharpest, his understanding of music and the industry has never been anything less than cutting edge. A fitting tribute to Countdown, rap music, breakdancing and the energetic Rock Steady Crew in their heyday...
